Carlos Alcaraz Wins Japan Open 2026 Final – Prize Money and Highlights

Carlos Alcaraz has not yet won the 2026 Japan Open final. As of October 4, 2026, the defending champion has reached the semifinals in Tokyo after Denis Shapovalov retired with an upper-right-thigh injury while Alcaraz was leading 7–6(7–3), 2–1. The Japan Open final is scheduled for October 6, so reports claiming Alcaraz has already won the title are premature.

    Alcaraz’s Japan Open title defense

Alcaraz arrived in Tokyo as the defending champion after winning the Japan Open in 2025. He has continued that title defense with three victories in this year’s tournament, although the Spaniard has had to work harder than the scorelines might suggest.

His opening match against Alex Michelsen was particularly demanding. Alcaraz eventually prevailed 7–6(1), 4–6, 6–1 after struggling with a revamped serve and adapting to difficult conditions in Tokyo. Rain had limited his preparation, and Michelsen took advantage of Alcaraz’s early errors before the Spaniard regained control in the deciding set.

Alcaraz then produced a much cleaner performance against Matteo Arnaldi in the round of 16, winning 7–6(6), 6–1. The first set was the critical moment, with Alcaraz saving four set points before dominating the second set and booking his place in the quarterfinals.

Quarterfinal win ends in injury retirement

The quarterfinal against Denis Shapovalov was another test for Alcaraz. The Canadian pushed him into a tense first-set tiebreak, but Alcaraz recovered from being unable to serve out the set at 6–5 and eventually won the tiebreak 7–3.

Shapovalov then appeared to suffer an injury to his upper right thigh at the beginning of the second set. After receiving medical attention, he continued briefly, but retired with Alcaraz ahead 2–1. The match lasted 82 minutes, sending Alcaraz into the semifinals without having to complete the contest.

The result also extended Alcaraz’s perfect record in Tokyo to 8–0. Despite advancing, the Spaniard made clear that this was not the way he wanted to reach the next round, acknowledging the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Shapovalov’s retirement.

Who will Alcaraz face in the semifinal?

Alcaraz’s next opponent is fellow Spaniard Jaume Munar. Munar reached the semifinal by defeating French qualifier Kyrian Jacquet 6–4, 6–2, continuing an impressive run at the ATP 500 event.

The semifinal will therefore give Alcaraz an opportunity to move one victory away from successfully defending his Tokyo title. Alcaraz has also previously held the upper hand against Munar, owning a 3–1 career record in their meetings.

    Japan Open 2026 prize money

The 2026 Japan Open has a total prize-money pool of $2,342,275. The singles champion is scheduled to receive $437,955, along with 500 ATP ranking points.

The runner-up will earn $235,685, while a semifinal appearance is worth $125,605. Quarterfinalists receive $64,170, with further prize money distributed to players eliminated in earlier rounds.

That means Alcaraz is guaranteed at least the semifinalist payout of $125,605, but he could increase that substantially by reaching the final or successfully defending his championship. A victory in Tokyo would add another $437,955 to his season’s prize-money earnings.

What Alcaraz is playing for in Tokyo

Beyond the financial reward, the Japan Open represents an important opportunity for Alcaraz at a crucial stage of the 2026 season. He is competing in only his third tournament since returning from a months-long wrist injury, having also reached the quarterfinals of the US Open.

Winning in Tokyo would therefore be significant as both a title defense and evidence that Alcaraz is rebuilding his momentum late in the season. The ATP 500 title would also provide 500 ranking points, making the result valuable as the tour moves toward the final stretch of the year.

When is the Japan Open final?

The 2026 Japan Open is being played at the Ariake Tennis Forest Park in Tokyo from September 30 through October 6. The singles final is scheduled for October 6, meaning there is no confirmed 2026 final score or winner yet as of October 4.

If Alcaraz defeats Munar in the semifinal, he will advance to the championship match and have the chance to claim his second consecutive Japan Open title. For now, however, the accurate headline is that Carlos Alcaraz has reached the Japan Open semifinals, not that he has won the 2026 final.
