Why Were Google Maps Media Controls Removed?

The disappearance of media playback controls from Google Maps caused confusion for many Android users, particularly drivers who relied on the built-in controls to pause music, skip tracks, or switch audio without leaving the navigation screen.

The important point is that Google did not intentionally decide to permanently remove the feature. In July 2025, Google confirmed that the disappearance was caused by a bug affecting media playback controls in Google Maps.

What Happened to Google Maps Media Controls?

Before the problem appeared, Google Maps on Android could display a small media-control panel while navigation was active. Depending on the supported music application, users could play or pause audio, skip tracks, view song information, browse suggestions, and open their media app.

In July 2025, users running Google Maps versions 25.28 and 25.29 beta began reporting that these controls had suddenly disappeared. For some users, the corresponding “Show media playback controls” option also disappeared from the Navigation settings.

    Was the Feature Actually Removed?

Initially, it looked like Google had deliberately removed the feature.

The timing created additional confusion because Google had already been moving away from its Assistant Driving Mode, making the in-navigation media controls more important for people who used their phones for navigation and entertainment.

However, Google later confirmed that the missing controls were the result of an issue, rather than a planned permanent removal. The company said it was actively working on a fix.

Why Did Users Think Google Removed It Permanently?

The confusion was understandable because the controls and related settings disappeared at the same time for many Android users.

Google Maps Community discussions from July 2025 also show users reporting that Spotify and other media options had vanished from their Navigation settings. Some users attempted troubleshooting steps such as reinstalling Spotify, clearing Maps data, and updating the application without immediately restoring the feature.

The situation was further complicated by the fact that the experience differed between devices, app versions, and platforms.

The Connection With Assistant Driving Mode

Google’s transition away from Assistant Driving Mode provided important context.

The former driving interface offered users a convenient way to access navigation, calls, messages, and media while driving. After Google deprecated that experience, the media controls integrated directly into Maps became an increasingly important way to control audio while navigating.

When those controls subsequently disappeared from some Android versions of Maps, users were left with fewer convenient options for controlling music without switching away from navigation.

When Did Google Maps Bring the Controls Back?

Google began restoring the functionality shortly after confirming the problem.

By late July 2025, reports indicated that the media controls and the corresponding setting had returned to multiple Android devices. The restoration appeared to be at least partly server-side, meaning users did not necessarily need to install a completely new Maps version for the feature to return.

However, the restoration was not necessarily identical for everyone. Some users continued reporting differences in how or where the controls appeared.

What Can You Do If Media Controls Are Missing?

If you still cannot find media controls in Google Maps, first make sure that both Google Maps and your preferred media application are updated.

Then open Google Maps, go to your profile picture, select Settings, and look under Navigation for the media playback controls option. Google Maps Community guidance has also pointed users toward this setting when troubleshooting the feature.

If the option is unavailable, the problem may be related to your particular Maps version, device, account, region, or supported media application rather than something you configured incorrectly.

Does Spotify Still Work With Google Maps?

Spotify has been one of the major applications associated with Google Maps’ navigation media controls.

Reports during the 2025 incident showed that some users could still see Spotify listed while others lost the integration entirely. This suggests that simply having Spotify installed does not necessarily guarantee that the Google Maps control panel will appear in every configuration.

YouTube Music has also been supported by the Maps media-control system, although availability and behavior can vary depending on the software version and platform.

    Why Are Media Controls Important?

The feature was designed to reduce the need to switch between applications while driving.

Instead of leaving the navigation screen to pause music or skip a track, drivers could access basic playback controls directly within Maps. This was especially useful for people whose vehicles did not have integrated infotainment controls.

Removing or temporarily disabling the feature therefore created frustration among users who depended on their phones as their primary navigation and media system.

Are Google Maps Media Controls Permanently Gone in 2026?

There is an important distinction between the 2025 disappearance and the current state of the feature.

The July 2025 disappearance was confirmed by Google as a bug, and Google subsequently began restoring the controls. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to describe the July incident as a confirmed permanent decision to eliminate media playback controls from Google Maps.

If the controls are missing from a particular device in 2026, the cause could instead be a version-specific issue, account or regional rollout, supported-app limitation, or another software problem.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Google Maps remove media controls?

They disappeared because of a bug affecting Google Maps on Android, rather than a confirmed permanent removal. Google acknowledged the issue and said it was working on a fix.

Did Google permanently remove Spotify controls?

No. The July 2025 incident was not confirmed as a permanent removal. The controls began returning after Google addressed the problem.

Why can’t I see “Show media playback controls”?

If the option is missing, your Maps version, device, region, account, or media-app integration may be affecting availability. Updating Google Maps is a sensible first step.

Can I control music without leaving Google Maps?

Where supported, Google Maps provides integrated media playback controls during navigation. If they are unavailable, users can alternatively use their vehicle’s controls, Android’s media notification, or the media application’s own interface, depending on their setup.

    Conclusion

The Google Maps media controls were not intentionally removed as a permanent feature in the widely reported July 2025 incident. They disappeared because of a software issue affecting certain Android users, and Google subsequently acknowledged the problem and worked on restoring the functionality.

The incident nevertheless highlighted how important integrated media controls had become for drivers, particularly after the transition away from Assistant Driving Mode. If the controls are still missing from your Google Maps installation in 2026, checking for updates and looking under Settings → Navigation is a good starting point.
